Rotoscoping
Rotoscoping was a tricker form of animation style trying to ad another layer to a set of glasses. We managed to do a few frames but because there was a lot of detail we found it is hard to do a longer piece with it.
Stop Motion
We tried out an idea for "Ridley" using stop motion animation and putting it together in Adobe premier pro. We took photos for 12 frames a second.
2D animation
We tried 2D animation using after effects making a blob move and bounce. This is a very effective way of using this animation and makes it look very smooth looking. It is also very editable.

Script

My idea for why animation is a concept called "Ridley". Ridley is a dark animation style taking inscription from salad fingers off of YouTube and the Netflix special Damar. All of the characters are speakable and there is no narration. The idea is that the main character Ridley is a cannibalise talking banana and he likes eating and peeling other fruits. Over time he then likes peeling and eating bananas too until the end where his predator eats him.

RIDLEY

Apple

apple sad.png

Ridley is the main character within our story who is a creepy salad fingers inspired cannibalise and murderer banana. He rolls and walks like Micheal Jackson and has a variety of faces for creepy interactions. Ridley likes to play games on a hill and his favourite is peeling.

Apple is more of a scared and quiet character. The voice of apple is more high pitch and faster talking and is very scared of Ridley. Apple moves by rolling along the floor and is very reluctant when he gets in the oven.

Orange

Orange we don't see too much of but he has a low pitch voice and gets very very angry with Ridley for eating apple however when he gets angry it makes Ridley more happy and he ends up dead because of his actions.

Watermelon

Watermelon comes in at the end and is the biggest plot twist of the animation where he accidentally kills him and then eats Ridely! He doesn't like waste watermelon! He has a smooth low sounding voice.

technical Requirments

To create our animation we needed to create a lot of assets for our after effects projects such as backgrounds and items such as an oven and a pie. To create the background pieces we mixed a variety of media together. For our day background I found a layer for the floor and the grass then added the moon and then created the sky using photoshop tools. With our wasteland we used varies images and edited them to match each other and items such as our oven we edited after finding original files.

We are also going to need the use of the adobe creative cloud suite for use of both photoshop for creating assists as well as after effects for the edit. We are going to be using after effects to make the characters move using the position, rotate and a number of other tools while they are on a background. The use of photoshop is for creating the variety of assets such as the backgrounds, characters and the props.

To use the creative cloud suite we are going to be using iMacs and MacBook Pros to complete the tasks at hand. Apple Macs are the best choice of computer for video editing and animation. This is the only piece of equipment we are going to need.

Creation of the short

Making our animation short on after effects using the assets we made involved mainly the position, rotation and the scale tools using keyframes to edit our characters across the screen. For Ridley we used rotation while moving his position across the screen to make him roll back and forward which makes him look like he moonwalks. To create the effect of apple in the oven screaming we used a series of different keyframes of rotation, position and scale to move him around while using the crying facial reaction. We then cut to Ridley acting in a strange unsettling manner. For the backgrounds we switch between different ones per location to give the sense that he is moving around a lot.

Feedback

I think Ridley/It's Playtime really succeeds in creating and creepy and unsettling animation which is created through the sly movements of the title character Ridley and the dialogue, the character designs are fun and engaging too which make the animation a really fun story to watch. To improve I think the additional variation in the camera framing could be used and additional smothing to the animation if given additional time.

Enzo Perold

Thanks Enzo for your great comments. The additional angles is something we all thought of as a group later on in the probes of making the animation and if we were to react this task again it would be something we would use more of. For the additional smoothing of the animation we decided to cut some time back on the animation as it was going to be around the 5 minute mark.

Evaluation

Overall I am very happy on how Ridley our short animation has turned out. We followed our storyboard plan and our script and only changed very slight details along the way.

We are very happy as a team on what we produced and the concept was really matched. Our original concept idea was a cannibalise banana who talks and likes the idea of getting peeled. We used inspiration from salad fingers of the line "I like rusty spoons" and we used "I like being peeled." We wanted to create a similar effect of the banana being on edge at all times and is very creepy. We wanted to include other characters within it however when planning we had a tough time in narrowing down which to choose if we wanted to go down the inanimate object route or make animals etc. We also took inspiration from Dammer the Netflix series about the serial killer and cannibalise. We wanted to creepy effect of it and the similar acting styles on being very calm when talking mixed with salad fingers.

We choose to 2D animation which was a first for everyone in the group however we all felt we executed the idea very well as our first time. By using 2D animation it gave us a lot of creative freedom across the project to switch and change various elements. We did try out several types of animation including rotoscoping and stop motion however neither of them worked as well as 2D. I feel we had a lot of success as a group while animation splitting different segments down for different people and dedicating tasks out. Using our skills in photoshop helped us to create the assets we needed for the animation and then using after effects to put them all together and move them. Using premiere pro a lot as well as some previous experience in after effects it was much simpler than we were expecting.

We talked as a group and even though we felt this project went really well there was a few issues that we would want to correct if we were to do this again. First would be our script which we felt was a very long script fore the animation. This was great as we were able to tell a great story however this did lead the animation to end up as 4 minutes and 30 seconds. We were trying to aim for 3 minutes so its differently something we would change for next time. We all also talked out our background animation style that we should keep it similar to each other rather than a big contrast in the style. We would have also like to include more background movement if we had more time in the eject which we would of had if we reduced our script length.

Overall I am incredibly happy with my animation which managed to follow its story and concept very well and created a great end product.
