CAPA 373

Cinematography

As a small group we have created a presentation on cinematography to present to fellow peers and Luke. We looked at all aspects from colours, lighting and equipment.

Presentation

In our small group we worked for 2 days on lighting. We recreated some scenes with interesting lighting techniques and created our own scenes with a design brief.

Shot 1

In our first shot we created we used lights to create a silhouette of a person holding a knife in the air next to their head to act like a "psychopath." To create this effect we lit the shot only from behind with Mini LED lights which were red and 1x1 panels with red gels.

Shot 2

To be able to create our 2nd shot we did lots of experimenting with different background. We started with a tv which was backlit but changed to using an iMac. This shot was interesting to light as it had on scene light as well as light on the face directly.

Shot 3

Shot 3 was an interesting shot to take which we used 3 1x1 panels for with a variety of gels. We had out main 1x1 as the brightest with a blue gel on it to create the blue on the left side of the face while a red and green light lit the right side.

Shot 4

Our 4th shot was easier said than done. After expense with our 1st silhouette we managed to backlit this picture against a wall to make the picture shadowless. We feel we did a great job recreating and improving.

Shot 5

IMG_0623_edited.jpg

Shot 5 was our first shot we filmed on the floor which allowed some intresting opotunitys using hand hold to get close up. We only used a 1x1 panel and a single mini LED.

Shot 6

_A634637.JPG

Our final shot we took we did different with our background being a light. We used a TV screen to create the multiple lights effect. We then used 2 1x1 panels on each side of the face with defusers and red and blue gels. This makes the light on the face really stand out.

Film 1

IMG_0632_edited.jpg

Our first berif was to create a scene based on a lighting storm. To create this effect we back lit the shot using 1x1 panels with blue gels while the flashing was done on the mini LEDS with the lighting function. We had lights on the camera, floor and on a arm in the air.

Film 2

IMG_0630_edited.jpg

Our 2nd shot was simple but harder to replicate. To create the fire effect we used the mini LED's fire effect as well as a 1x1 panel blocking it with a hand to create the moving effect of a fire.

Film 3

IMG_0631_edited.jpg

Our 3rd film was our hardest to shoot because of the logistical challenges. We filmed walking around thew class which involved moving with the camera and lights. We used multiple mini LED's on the police light function. We used 2 1x1 panels with the yellow/warm tint to be able to create lights that would look like lamp posts. We then used 2 torch's to create a search light effect which it would of looked like from a helicopter from above. For this we used 2 wide range torches at each end of the room.

Film 4

IMG_0629_edited.jpg

Our 4th and final scene was a scene to replicate a lake. We learnt how too create a water looking shadow effect using a large 2 letter bottle and a torch. Shaking the bottle to move the water around creates a rippling effect.

In our small group and individually we have created the documents, scripts and storyboards we need to create our short dialogue scene

RAW FOOtage

In the RAW footage file 1 we used a Dolly to create the moving effect while walking through the door. This is a shot where Jenny is entering her office with only a few minutes before she has to get in.

In the RAW footage file 2 we used a tripod and a 24-70mm lens to zoom into Danny for the main dialogue section. We filmed the whole convocation in a single take which allows for continuity.

In the RAW footage file 3 we used a tripod to film over the shoulder of Danny looking at Jenny. For continuity we continued to film for the whole dialogue even when we would have cut. Instead we moved to a different angle.

In the RAW footage file 4 we used the Dolly to move back slowly from Danny answering the phone. We allowed time in the middle where we would cut to Jenny outside before eating Danny move. We achieved this by using hand signals behind the camera

In the RAW footage 5 we used a tripod to film the outside shot. This was done by using the widest point on our lens. We had to use an extra long XLR cable to be able to get the audio constant with the rest of the film.

In the RAW file 6 footage we used a dolly moving slowly towards Danny. We filmed at a higher frame rate so we would be able to slow down the footage in post production to make it look like the time is moving more slowly.

Above is some of the footage we took on the day of shooting unedited showing how we started each shot with logging and the clapperboard and where we cut each shot and what potentially went wrong. All of these shots were carefully planned in pre production so we knew what we needed to shoot exactly on the day. Overall we are very pleased how the footage turned out.

Behind the scenes

Throughout the morning we worked hard to be able to shoot the entire short scene within our time window. We split the roles of the group into different parts with Robbie as Director, Max as Assistant Director, Myself as Director of Photography, Ria as Sound Co-ordinator and Raqiya taking BTS Shots as well as production Co-ordinator for the actors.

Before we start the editing process we are organising our footage to make it easier during the editing process. I have separate the files into 4 categories - BTS, Green, Orange and Red which shows what footage is usable or not. In the green folder I have split the usable footage into 4 folders on where it could be based on our log sheets which everything matches up what on names.

We used clapperboards and log sheets to help line up all of the footage during post production. All the footage is named and logged compared to the log sheet. As you can see on the log sheet we have named every shot and matched up to the footage file on the SD card. On the clapperboard we changed the shot and take very time Toit would be easier to find during post production.

Post production
unnamed-12.jpg

We decide not to use this shot as on our log sheet it showed there was a light in the corner which didn't match up with continuity.

This shot was a great take and is 1 of 3. We only had to film this 3 times because we had some issues with lines. We used all 3 shots in post.

We could not use this shot as there was a car alarm that was very obvious didn't belong in the take during the shot we we called cut.

unnamed-13.jpg

Our pan part of this shot wasn't completed correctly as we over estimated the timing of the shot so it didn't work. For the following shot we amended it.

In our group we have recorded our short dialogue scene working title security at the audience reception.

post-
Production

We started to film this shot in the wrong frame rate so we didn't use it otherwise it was ok.

We couldn't use this take as Robbie's arm as in the corner of the shot and didn't look natural for the office reception

This was a great take however we decided to re take it as we couldn't tell how the final shot would have looked.

EDITING

Screenshot 2022-01-04 at 11.16.22 am.png

Here is a section of my timeline for the project whooshing all the different shots with them cut and hidden but not deleted. This is so I could come back later if I had changed my mind.

I have edited the colour wheels of this shot as it was before extremely dark however now I have changed it to look more fitting to the scene. For most of the shots they don't require any correction due to the great lighting we used on set.

Screenshot 2022-01-04 at 11.23.35 am.png
Screenshot 2022-01-04 at 11.27.53 am.png

I used a Gaussain blur which adds an effect where there is a blur in equal amounts - horizontal and vertical. To do this I used a pre set effect from the final cut effects library.
