Market Research

Context, Need and target Audience

Target Audience is planning to B-C as tom is B as a graphic designer as well as some e as students who want to learn more about it and get ideas for careers. These people we are hoping are Reformers as trying to learn more and explorers who are actively earning more already. The interest in this is key with the audience with documentaries on channel 5 like 24/7 showing behind closed doors show there is a need to show the behind the scenes and not many people have and also looked into the mental health aspect of it which many people are trying to expand their knowledge about.

The need for this short documentary is for people wanting to explore more and be interested in different varieties of topics. One of the major topics I would like to explore in this is mental health and the impact of the job on it. They're maybe times where there is a traumatic experience with a job because some of the horror scenes they have to attend. Our target audience shows we need this documentary to be produced.

Project Outline

Life of a firefighter is going to be short documentary, 5 minutes in length. In the documentary I want to show how great being a firefighter is and how rewarding your daily work is. However I also want to show the negatives of being a firefighter with the battle of mental health issues. The media I am intending to use in this short documentary is sit down interview A-roll footage with lots of B-roll footage shot at the fire station showing what they on a day to day basis. I also want to highlight the person being interviewed background and what made them want to become a firefighter and how something might of inspired them. This short documentary is planned to be shown on online video streaming platforms such as Youtube as well as potentially in a longer documentary about firefighters and this being a short segment of it. I want my target audience to be inspired by my 5 minute documentary to do more for maybe to the community.

The way I want to film this short documentary is in a casual environment which a perfect location would be the shop Tom works in on Hill Road in Clevedon which I have done test shooting in the building before. Ir has great natural light within the building due to the wide opening windows art the front of the shop as well as lots of ceiling lights throughout the shop as it is a graphic design studio and printing shop. The environment is great as well with lots of items on the wall as well as art. There is a purple elephant wallpaper onto a wall as well as a mural which has a natural vibe at the back of the shop. Overall I am hoping for my target audience to gain lots of information about firefighting from this from a real firefighter and what it is like in and out of work.

Presentation pitch

I am very pleased on how my Pitch has gone. Over the past month I have been researching and creating a pitch to present to be able to get the budget funding needed for the project.

Over the past month I have been completing market research about a variety of short personal documentaries. I have analysed 2 of these as part of this unit and presented them. I explain in each one what the context, theme and need is for it as well as the main target audaince which for both of them was similar. The two I chose to analyse quite different in styling with one being scripted and talking to camera while the other has a 2nd interview which is very rare for a personal documentary.

I then created a moodpboard and 2 mind maps. My mood-board shows all my pictures and thoughts for Life of a firefighter which includes archive footage as well as scenes I would like to use myself and pictures of firefighters on the job. I created 2 mind maps to show different things. I first created an overall mind map which showed all my list of ideas and people I could contact and then I narrowed it down to 2 ideas and explained them further with more detailed information.

Once I put together all the elements of the pitch I presented it in a 10 Minute presentation which included questions at the end. This allowed me to show my ideas and show what needs changing. My presentation got great feedback which was very valuable as it shows what is good about my project and not much needs changing to be able to create a great short personal documentary film between 3 and 5 minutes in length.

Overall I am very happy with how the pitching went however if I was going to complete this task again I would have completed a third piece of market research so I would be able to learn more about personal documentaries before starting one.
